The exhibition is divided into eight sections exploring transnational histories of museum collections in London and Paris between the mid-nineteenth century and the early twentieth century and the impact of temporary exhibitions on the evolution of museums.

This exhibition is based on the 'Universal Histories and Universal Museums' research project, which investigates the origins and evolution of collections and museums, and their relations to ideas regarding the construction of historical knowledge.

A project at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the University of Lancaster, and the Université of Nanterre Paris 10, in partnership with the Musée de l'Homme and the Musée du quai Branly Jacques Chirac, funded by the AHRC ‘Care for the Future: Thinking Forward through the Past’ and the LABEX ‘Pasts in the Present’ programmes.
